Legislative Update

Notification of abuse or neglect assessment

January 15, 2016 Filed Under: Family

The Senate Family and Children Services Committee heard SB 159 on notification of abuse or neglect assessment authored by Sen. Banks and Sen. Grooms.  This bill requires notification to the U.S. Department of Defense if a child of a parent, guardian or custodian on active duty in the military is the subject of an allegation of abuse or neglect.  Committee members expressed concern about reports of abuse or neglect, assessments, or investigations remaining on the parent’s military record even if later found to be unsubstantiated. The bill was amended to only require substantiated reports of abuse or neglect to be reported to the Department of Defense. The bill passed as amended, 7-0.
