Legislative Update

Drug enforcement, treatment and prevention

January 29, 2016 Filed Under: Judicial Administration

The Senate Judiciary Committee heard Sen. Merritt’s SB 271 on drug enforcement, treatment and prevention. This bill establishes the Indiana Commission to Combat Drug Abuse (ICCDA). It also repeals the Commission for a Drug Free Indiana and requires the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) to assume certain duties of the repealed Commission for a Drug Free Indiana concerning the approval of comprehensive drug free community plans and grants. Additionally, the bill provides that the executive director of the ICJI has certain responsibilities concerning the ICCDA and local coordinating councils.
A representative of Indiana state agencies testified in support of the bill. The bill passed 10-0.
