The House Courts and Criminal Code Committee heard SB 357 on registry of convicted child abusers sponsored by Rep. Morris and Rep. Steuerwald. The bill requires the State Police Department to establish an electronic child abuse registry containing information relating to individuals convicted of a crime of child abuse. Chair Rep. Washburne declined to entertain an amendment expanding the scope of the registry to include all felony convictions and to shift the establishment of the registry to the Division of State Court Administration.
Testimony was heard from the Division of State Court Administration on the costs of implementation. Testimony was heard in support of the bill from a member of the public. The bill passed 11-0.
