Legislative Update

Hemp oil registry for the treatment of epilepsy

February 10, 2017 Filed Under: Criminal

The Senate Corrections and Criminal Code Committee heard Sen. Tomes’ SB 15 on hemp oil registry for the treatment of epilepsy. The bill would establish a hemp oil registry for physicians and caregivers for the use of hemp oil in treating children with intractable epilepsy.
Sen. Tomes offered an amendment changing “oil” to “extract” throughout the bill, changing the percentage of THC in extracts, adding nurses to the list of authorized registry caregivers, and conferring immunity on participating pharmacists.  Sen. Koch offered an amendment which would change the permissible extract content from one containing THC to one containing cannabidiol and make other changes; the amendment failed for lack of a second.  Sen. Tomes’ amendment was then passed 5-3. The bill passed as amended 5-3.
