The Senate Judiciary Committee heard Sen. Bassler and Sen. Kruse’s SB 367 on revocation of teaching licenses. The bill requires a court to issue an order recommending to the Department of Education revocation of a defendant’s teaching license if the defendant is convicted of certain crimes and the victim is a child less than 18 years of age. The bill also requires the Department of Education to revoke the license upon receipt of the court order and provides that a presentence investigation includes gathering information with respect to whether the convicted defendant holds a teaching license.
The bill was held over from last week and was amended by consent to add a reinstatement hearing if a conviction is vacated or reversed, to make the Division of State Court Administration responsible for reporting convictions to the Department of Education, and to make the effective date of the bill January 1, 2018. The bill passed as amended, 10-0.
