Legislative Update

Authorization to carry a handgun

February 17, 2017 Filed Under: Civil

The House Public Policy Committee heard, for amend and vote only, Rep. Eberhart’s HB 1071 providing that certain persons protected by a civil protection order have authorization to carry a handgun without a license for: (1) 60 days after the date the civil protection order is issued; or (2) 60 days after the date the person applies for a license to carry a handgun, if the person applies for the license during the 60-day period following issuance of the civil protection order; whichever is later.
The bill was amended to reduce the age of the protected person that this applies to from 21 years old to 18 years old and to request the assignment of studying the repeal of the law that requires a person to obtain a license to carry a handgun in Indiana. The amended bill passed 8-4.
