The Senate Corrections Committee heard HB 1218, sponsored by Sen. Head and Sen. Bray, on juvenile justice. The bill adds additional members to a community corrections advisory board and allows an application for a state grant for a community corrections program for juveniles to be made to the department of correction division of youth services. The bill also provides that a child who was: (1) the victim of human trafficking; and (2) adjudicated a delinquent child for an act performed while a victim of human trafficking and the delinquent act was a result of human trafficking; is entitled to have the adjudication expunged.
Extensive supporting testimony was provided by the Indiana Public Defender Council, the Autism Society of Indiana, Prevent Child Abuse Indiana, the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic, the Indiana Association of Resources and Child Advocacy, Allen County Superior Court Judge Charles Pratt, Boone County Superior Court Judge Bruce Petit, the Marion County Commission on Youth, and the Indiana Protection for Abused and Trafficked Humans Task Force. The bill was held for amendments at the next meeting.
