The Senate Homeland Security and Transportation Committee heard SB 266 on motor vehicle safety authored by Sen. Crider. The bill amends several sections regarding vehicle equipment (displaying license plates, head lamps, stop lights on rear of vehicle, signal lamps, window tint); requires violations of altered speed limits by local authorities and INDOT under IC 9-21-5-6, 8, and 12 would be Class C infractions (Class B infractions for school zones); requiring proof of financial responsibility to be within the vehicle or on the person operation the vehicle in a form that can be provided to law enforcement when requested; and permits a plain clothes law enforcement officer to make an arrest for reckless driving and operating while intoxicated that endangers a person.
Indiana State Police, Fraternal Order of Police, Association of Indiana Chiefs of Police, and Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council testified in support of the bill. The bill passed 9-0 and recommitted to Appropriations.
