Scleral tattooing

January 12, 2018 Filed Under: Civil

The Senate Civil Law Committee heard SB 158 on scleral tattooing authored by Sen. Ruckelshaus. This bill prohibits the act of performing or offering to perform scleral tattooing in the eye, except by a licensed health care professional when the act is performed in the scope of the health care professional’s practice. It also provides that the Attorney General has authority to receive and investigate complaints regarding violations of the statute, may seek civil penalties of up to $10,000 per violation of the statute, and may seek an injunction to restrain a person from continuing to violate the statute.
A professor of Ophthalmology testified in favor of this bill. The bill passed 5-2.
