The Senate Judiciary Committee heard SB 33 on houses of worship and firearms, authored by Sen. Sandlin. The bill permits a person who may legally possess a firearm to possess a firearm on school property if the person possesses the firearm: (1) as an employee or volunteer of a house of worship located on the school property; or (2) while attending a worship service or religious ceremony conducted at a house of worship located on the school property. The bill was amended by majority vote to declare an emergency for the act and add “has permission of the house of worship” to possess the firearm.
The bill was supported by the Southport Presbyterian Church, the Indiana Family Institute, Advance America, and a Second Amendment attorney. The bill was opposed by Bloomington Congregation Beth Shalom and an Indiana University Maurer School of Law professor. The amended bill passed 5-2.
