Legislative Update

Payment of court fees

January 11, 2019 Filed Under: Judicial Administration

The House Courts & Criminal Code Committee heard Rep. Pressel’s HB 1087 on payment of court fees, allowing a court to reduce some or all of the court costs owed by a person who performs community service or uncompensated volunteer work by determining the number of hours of community service or volunteer work performed by the person, multiplying the number of hours worked by the Indiana minimum wage, and deducting that figure from the amount owed.
An amendment was adopted by consent that clarifies language and defines the word “work.” A representative from the Indiana Public Defenders Council, testified in support of the bill. The amended bill passed 12-0.
