The Senate Committee on Family and Children Services heard SB 36 requiring the Office of Judicial Administration to establish an electronic elder and adult abuse registry containing information relating to persons convicted of a crime of elder or adult abuse.
Representatives from Indiana Area Agencies on Aging Association, Indiana Health Care Association, the WINGS taskforce in Indiana, and the Indiana Adult Guardianship Task Force testified in support of the bill. Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Counsel testified in support with a qualifier that OJA is willing and able to create and maintain the registry. The bill was amended by consent to clarify that the law did not impose an affirmative duty on anyone to check the registry prior to completing banking transactions. The amended bill passed 9-0.
