Legislative Update

Sex offenders and child care services

March 22, 2019 Filed Under: Criminal

The House Committee on Family, Children & Human Affairs heard SB 258, sponsored by Rep. Manning, on sexually violent predators. The current law prohibits a sexually violent predator or an offender against children from working for compensation or as a volunteer on school property, at a youth program center, or at a public park. A violation is a Level 6 felony. The bill was amended to add working for compensation or as a volunteer: as a child care provider, for a child care provider, or as a babysitter to the list of prohibited activities.
A representative from the Madison County Sheriff’s Department Sex Offender Registry explained the need for, and testified in favor of, the bill. The Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council also testified in favor of the bill. The amended bill passed 12-0.
