The House Courts and Criminal Code Committee heard HB 1047 concerning Justice Reinvestment Advisory Council authored by Rep. Steuerwald. The bill adds the Indiana Association of Counties, Indiana Judges Association, Indiana Public Defender Commission, chair and ranking minority members of House Courts and Criminal Code Committee, chair and ranking minority members of the Senate Corrections and Criminal Code Committee, and the Governor as members of JRAC. The bill also expands the purpose and duties of JRAC to incorporate the scope and work of Indiana’s Evidence Based Decision Making Initiative.
The bill was amended by consent to incorporate additional focus areas and make the bill effective upon passage. Mary Kay Hudson, Executive Director of IOCS, Indiana Public Defender Council, Association of Indiana Counties, Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council, and Indiana Sheriffs’ Association testified in support. The amended bill passed 11-0.
