Legislative Update

Specialized driving privileges

January 10, 2020 Filed Under: Traffic

The Senate Committee on Corrections and Criminal Law heard SB 39 authored by Sen. Freeman regarding specialized driving privileges. This bill removes the restriction that specialized driving privileges, when granted, must be for at least one hundred eighty (180) days; and not more than two and one-half (2 1/2) years and permits a court to stay a person’s suspension of driving privileges and grant specialized driving privileges for a period of time as determined by the court.
The bill was amended by consent to provide that a court also has discretion to set periodic review hearings to review an individual’s specialized driving privileges.
The Indiana Public Defender Council and attorney John Fierek testified in support of the bill. The amended bill passed 9-0.
