The Senate Corrections and Criminal Code Committee heard HB 1047 concerning Justice Reinvestment Advisory Council sponsored by Sens. M. Young, Koch, and Randolph. Rep. Steuerwald presented bill, which was requested by JRAC and the Evidence Based Decision Making State Policy Team (EBDM) to combine these groups since they share many of the same members and common goals. The bill expands the membership of JRAC and adds to the purpose and goals of JRAC to encompass the work of EBDM.
The bill was amended by consent to ensure consistency between code sections referenced in this bill and HB 1346 on jail overcrowding. Mary Kay Hudson, Executive Director of the Indiana Office of Court Services, testified in support. Others testifying in support included the Indiana Public Defender Council and the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council. The amended bill passed 9-0.
