The Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee heard SB 134, authored by Sen. Freeman and Sen. Sandlin, regarding transport of passengers during probationary period license status. The bill increases the penalty for operating a motor vehicle containing passengers during the initial 180-day probationary period after issuance of a driver’s license and permits license suspension for a violation. The bill also allows a court to suspend the license of a person convicted of operating a motor vehicle after failing to take a prescribed medication.
The bill was amended by consent to permit any license suspension to be discretionary and to permit those suspended to be eligible for specialized driving privileges.
The Indiana Public Defender Council testified in opposition. The amended bill passed 7-1.
