The House Courts and Criminal Code Committee heard HB 1137 on protective orders authored by Rep. Cook.Thebillprovides that an order for protection issued ex parte or upon notice and a hearing, or a modification of an order for protection issued ex parte or upon notice and a hearing, is effective for two years after the date of issuance, or indefinitely after the date of issuance if the respondent is required to register as a lifetime sex or violent offender, unless another date is ordered by the court.
The Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council Indiana, Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and a crime victim testified in support of the bill. The Indiana Public Defender Council testified in support of the idea but opposed the bill as written. The bill passed 10-0.
