On January 4, 2022, the Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee heard SB 124 on specialized driving privileges authored by Sen. Freeman. The bill provides that an individual subject to both an administrative license suspension and a court ordered license suspension must file a petition for specialized driving privileges in the court that ordered the suspension. The bill also repeals the statute requiring a signal of intention to turn 200 feet before turning or changing lanes. The bill was held for amendment.
On January 11, 2022, the bill was amended by consent to specify that a person operating a vehicle must give reasonable notice before slowing or stopping, turning, or changing lanes. The amendment also changed the effective date to January 1, 2023, and specified that filing a petition for specialized driving privileges is not mandatory. Attorney John Fierek and the Indiana Public Defender Council testified in support of the bill. The amended bill passed 7-0.
