Discontinuance of youth offender boot camps

The House Courts and Criminal Code Committee heard HB 1181 on discontinuance of youth offender boot camps authored by Rep. DeVon.The billprovides that juvenile offenders may not be placed in Department of Correction boot camps beginning July 1, 2022. The bill also provides, for purposes of juvenile offenders who are already participating in the boot camp program on July 1, 2022, that the boot camp program expires December 31, 2023.

The bill was amended by consent to add a cap on the amount a penal facility may charge inmates for a phone call.  The Indiana Public Defender Council and Department of Correction testified in support of the bill. The amended bill passed 11-0.
