On January 11, 2022, the Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee heard SB 10 on Marion County crime reduction pilot authored by Sen. Crider.This billestablishes the: (1) Marion County violent crime reduction pilot project; and (2) Marion County violent crime reduction pilot project fund; to identify violent crime reduction districts in Marion County and to provide grants for overtime and additional law enforcement services in the violent crime reduction districts. The bill also defines “violent crime reduction district.”
The Fraternal Order of Police, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, and the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council testified in support of the bill. The Indiana Public Defender Council and then Vera Institute of Justice testified in opposition. The bill was held for amendment.
On January 18, 2022, the bill was amended by consent to permit “programs” other than a law enforcement agency to receive grants from the Marion County violent crime reduction pilot project.
The amended bill passed 9-0.
