Legislative Update

New courts and new magistrates

The House Courts and Criminal Code Committee heard HB 1114 on new courts and new magistrates authored by Rep. Torr. The bill:

  • Allows the judges of the Delaware Circuit court to appoint a full-time magistrate.
  • Establishes a second superior court in the Dubois County judicial district.
  • Allows the judges of the Elkhart Circuit and Superior courts to appoint four full-time magistrates (effective July1, 2023) and two additional full-time magistrates beginning January 1, 2024.
  • Allows the judge of the Spencer Circuit Court to appoint a magistrate.
  • Adds a judge to Vigo Superior Court.

Testimony from Elkhart County Judge Gretchen Lund was heard in support of the proposed changes to the Elkhart County courts. Elkhart County Commissioner Rogers also testified in support of the bill. The bill passed 13-0.
