The Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee heard SB 136 on conviction data authored by Sen. Sandlin.The bill defines “prohibited person” as a person prohibited from possessing a firearm or carrying a handgun. The bill requires: (1) the Office of Judicial Administration to establish a system to transmit certain data to assist in determining whether a person is a prohibited person; (2) a court, immediately after entering a judgment of conviction, to transmit to the state police department the data from the office of judicial administration and the judgment of conviction; and (3) the state police department to enter into the Indiana data and communication system (IDACS) information received from a court.
The bill was amended by consent to require entry of a qualifying judgment of conviction in the “court’s system” (INcite) instead of merely transmitting the data to IDACS.
The Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council testified in support of the bill. The Indiana Office of Court Technology testified, but remained neutral. The amended bill passed 7-0 and was recommitted to Appropriations. Read the bill at:
