The House Courts and Criminal Code Committee heard HB 1186 regarding encroachment on an investigation authored by Rep. McNamara and Rep. Karickhoff.The bill provides that a person who knowingly or intentionally approaches within 25 feet of a law enforcement officer after the law enforcement officer has ordered the person to stop commits a Class C misdemeanor.
Rep. McNamara described the bill as both a law enforcement officer and public safety measure. Testimony on this bill was heard in a prior interim study committee. Testimony in support of the bill was heard from law enforcement officers, the Indiana State Fraternal Order of Police, Indiana Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Indiana Sheriff’s Association. Testimony in opposition to the bill was heard from the Indiana Public Defender Council. The bill passed 13-0.
