The House Courts and Criminal Code Committee heard HB 1087 on transportation for a released offender authored by Rep. Moed and Rep. Morris. The bill prohibits the Department of Correction from providing transportation to or procuring transportation or public transportation to a county other than the released offender’s county of residence at the time of conviction.
Rep. Moed explained that this bill is the result of a Task Force formed during COVID-19 to address homelessness in Indianapolis. Amendment #3 was adopted by consent providing that transportation to any county other than the offender’s county of residence at the time of conviction may occur if certain conditions are met.
The Indiana Public Defender Council and the City of Indianapolis rose in support of the bill. The amended bill passed 13-0.
