Legislative Update

Conviction Data

February 24, 2023 Filed Under: Criminal, Judicial Administration

The Senate Appropriations Committee heard SB 136 on conviction data authored by Sen. Sandlin and Sen. Freeman. The bill defines “prohibited person” as a person prohibited from possessing a firearm or carrying a handgun. The bill requires the Office of Judicial Administration to establish a system to transmit certain data to assist in determining whether a person is a prohibited person; and a court, immediately after entering a judgment of conviction, to enter this information and the judgment of conviction into the court’s system.

The bill was amended by consent to provide that the Office of Judicial Administration and courts may, instead of shall, carry out the functions specified in the bill.

Mary DePrez, Executive Director of the Office of Court Technology, testified for informational purposes.  The amended bill passed 12-0.
