The Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee heard HB 1186 on encroachment on an investigation sponsored by Sen. Freeman and Sen. Sandlin.The author, Rep. McNamara, introduced the bill which provides that a person who knowingly or intentionally approaches within 25 feet of a law enforcement officer after the law enforcement officer has ordered the person to stop commits a Class C misdemeanor.
The Indiana Sheriffs’ Association and Indiana Association of Chiefs of Police testified in support of the bill. The American Civil Liberties Union, Young Americans for Liberty, and the Indiana Public Defender Council testified in opposition. The bill passed 8-0.
