The Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee heard HB 1365 sponsored by Sen. Freeman, Sen. Pol, and Sen. Hunley on machine guns. The author, Rep. Gore, presented the bill which revises, for purposes of an enhancement and certain criminal offenses, a definition of “machine gun”. The bill also provides that particular criminal offenses concerning machine guns do not apply to certain persons, including persons possessing machine guns or other items not required to be registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record maintained by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The bill was amended by consent to make the bill effective upon passage. The Indiana Sheriff’s Association, Indiana Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council testified in support of the bill. The Indiana Public Defender counsel testified in opposition. The amended bill passed 8-0.
