The Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee heard HB 1087 on transportation for a released offender sponsored by Sen. Taylor, Sen. Freeman, and Sen. Qaddoura.The author, Rep. Moed,introduced the bill which provides that the Department of Correction may not provide transportation to, or procure transportation or public transportation to, a county other than the released offender’s county of residence at the time of conviction unless certain circumstances apply.
The Indiana Public Defender Council, Public Advocates in Community Re-Entry, and the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority Low Barrier Homeless Shelter Task Force testified in support of the bill. The Department of Correction testified for informational purposes. The bill passed 7-0.
