The House Public Health Committee heard HB 1216 authored by Rep. Steuerwald on medical services for certain detainees. The bill requires Medicaid reimbursement for services required to be covered by the office of the secretary of family and social services provided to an eligible individual while the individual is involuntarily committed to a facility for mental health services. The bill also allows a physician to consider information from family, friends, etc. when determining whether to sign an application for emergency detention. The bill was amended to provide additional clarity and reorganize the sections regarding reimbursement for services.
The Indiana Public Defender Council, Indiana Council of Community Mental Health Centers, a payor representative, and a psychiatric nurse practitioner testified in support of the bill. The amended bill passed 11-0.
