Legislative Update

Prohibited causes of action concerning firearms

January 19, 2024 Filed Under: Civil

The House Judiciary Committee heard HB 1235 on prohibited causes of action concerning firearms authored by Rep. Jeter and Rep. Manning. The bill provides that only the state of Indiana may bring or maintain an action by or on behalf of a political subdivision against a firearm or ammunition manufacturer, trade association, seller, or dealer, concerning certain matters; prohibits a political subdivision from otherwise independently bringing or maintaining such an action; and specifies an exception.

The following testified in support of the bill: 2A Project, Indiana State Rifle and Pistol Association, Indiana Attorney General’s Office, National Shooting Sports Association, and National Rifle Association. Two members of the public testified against the bill. The bill passed 8-2.
