The Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee heard SB 14 on right of state officer or employee to carry a handgun in the capitol authored by Sen. Tomes and Sen. Bohacek. The bill defines “state officer or employee” as an individual who holds the elected office of attorney general, secretary of state, state comptroller, or treasurer of state, or who is a full time employee of the office, and provides that a state officer or employee who meets certain requirements has the right to carry a handgun within the state capitol building and on the property of the state capitol complex.
The bill was amended on a roll-call vote to allow an individual who is employed full time by the: (1) attorney general; (2) secretary of state; (3) state comptroller; or (4) treasurer of state; to carry a handgun within the state capitol building and on the property of the state capitol complex if certain conditions are met.
The Treasurer of State testified in support of the bill and a high school student testified against the bill. The amended bill passed 5-2.
