At a previous meeting, the Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee heard SB 290 on criminal justice data authored by Sen. Freeman and Sen. Carrasco. The bill requires the Indiana criminal justice institute and the department of correction to collect and distribute certain criminal justice data. The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and the Indiana Department of Correction testified in support of the bill.
On January 30, 2024, the bill was heard for amend and vote. The committee amended the bill by consent to reinstate the requirement for the Department of Correction to report the number of inmates and beds for each facility and specify that the annual report submitted by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute with the Justice Reinvestment Advisory Council is due on January 1 of each year. The amended bill passed 6-0.
