Possession of xylazine

February 16, 2024 Filed Under: Criminal

The Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee heard HB 1203 on possession of xylazine authored by Rep. Meltzer and sponsored by Sen. Johnson, Sen. Freeman, and Sen. Carrasco. The bill makes possession of xylazine a Class A misdemeanor and increases the penalty to a Level 6 felony if the person has a prior unrelated conviction for possession of xylazine. The bill also exempts certain persons using, distributing, or manufacturing xylazine for veterinary purposes.

The Indiana Public Defender Council testified in opposition to the bill. The bill passed 5-1.
