The House Public Policy Committee heard SB 149, authored by Sen. Rogers and sponsored by Reps. King, McNamara and Meltzer, on tobacco. In relevant part, this bill provides that a minor who falsely represents the minor’s age for the purpose of purchasing a tobacco product is subject to a civil penalty and must attend a smoking cessation class. It also provides that a person who recklessly, knowingly, or intentionally sells a tobacco product without a valid certificate commits a Class C infraction.
The amendment, taken by consent, removed the language that a minor who falsely represents the minor’s age for the purpose of purchasing a tobacco product is subject to a civil penalty and must attend a smoking cessation class. A representative from the Shelby Eastern Schools testified in favor of the bill. The amended bill passed 9-0.
