Legislative Update

Driving with suspended driving privileges

January 31, 2025 Filed Under: Traffic

The House Courts and Criminal Code Committee heard HB 1554 on driving with suspended driving privileges authored by Rep. Bascom.  The bill provides that a person who operates a motor vehicle after the person’s driving privileges are forfeited for life commits a Level 6 felony.

The Committee amended the bill by consent to specify that the penalty for operating a motor vehicle while under a lifetime forfeiture of driving privileges is: (1) a Level 6 felony, if the forfeiture occurred before July 1, 2015; and (2) a Level 5 felony, if the forfeiture occurred after June 30, 2015.

The Indiana Public Defender Council testified in support of the bill.  The Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council testified but remained neutral.  The amended bill passed 13-0.
