The House Courts and Criminal Code Committee heard SB 231 on various corrections matters sponsored by Rep. Bartels and Rep. Sweet. Author Sen. Bohacek introduced the bill which eliminates requirements that the Department of Correction (DOC) maintain farm programs for offenders committed to the DOC and prepare a report calculating the savings realized as a result of sentencing changes. The bill also replaces a reference to a rule repealed by the DOC with a requirement that the custody and treatment of juveniles meet the standards and licensing requirements adopted in the administrative rules of the DOC.
A representative from the DOC testified in support of the bill. The bill passed 13-0.
