Legislative Update

Law enforcement officer criminal convictions

March 21, 2025 Filed Under: Criminal

The Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee heard HB 1471 regarding law enforcement officer criminal convictions sponsored by Sen. Clark, Sen. Freeman, and Sen. Carrasco. Author Rep. Steuerwald testified that the bill is a joint effort between prosecutors and law enforcement to establish the Giglio list and procedures for adding a name to the list. A Giglio list, also known as a Brady/Giglio list, is a list of law enforcement officers who have been accused of misconduct.

The committee amended the bill by consent to require a Giglio designee to notify the prosecutor of certain facts and specifies the circumstances under which a Giglio list may be used. The Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council and law enforcement representatives testified in support of the bill. The amended bill passed 7-0.
