Civil rights commission

H.E.A. 1193, P.L. 83-2026

Effective: July 1, 2026

  • Amends the definition of “discriminatory practice.”
  • Provides that the civil rights commission (commission) may not represent a private individual and may only represent the state in a civil action filed in circuit or superior court.
  • Requires the commission to send a complaint received by the commission to the state or federal agency that has jurisdiction over the complaint.
  • Provides that attorney’s fees may not be awarded in a civil action brought in a trial court.
