Legislative Update

Stolen valor

January 29, 2016 Filed Under: Criminal

The House Courts and Criminal Code Committee heard HB 1187 on stolen valor, authored by Rep. Moseley.  The bill provides that a person who knowingly or intentionally, with the intent to obtain money, property, or another benefit: (1) fraudulently represents himself or herself to be an active member or veteran of the armed forces of the United States; (2) uses falsified military identification; or (3) fraudulently claims to be the recipient of certain military honors; commits stolen valor, a Level 6 felony. The bill also requires fees collected for the crime of stolen valor to be deposited in the veterans’ affairs trust fund.
The Committee amended the bill to delete the $200 fee and change the level of offense to a Class A misdemeanor.  The bill passed as amended, 10-0.
